Post-Op Care

Essential information for recovering from retina surgery and procedures. Know what to expect and when to seek help.

General Post-Op Guidelines

The First Few Days

  • Rest with your head elevated
  • Use eye drops as prescribed
  • Wear the eye shield/patch as directed
  • Avoid touching or rubbing your eye
  • Keep water out of your eye when bathing

Activity Restrictions

  • Avoid heavy lifting (>10 lbs) for 1-2 weeks
  • No strenuous exercise for 2-4 weeks
  • Avoid bending over sharply
  • Don't drive until cleared by your doctor
  • Limit screen time initially

Important Restrictions

If You Have a Gas Bubble in Your Eye

  • NO air travel - can cause dangerous pressure changes
  • NO scuba diving - similar pressure concerns
  • NO high altitudes - mountain travel can be dangerous
  • NO nitrous oxide anesthesia - interacts with gas bubble

The gas bubble will slowly absorb over 1-8 weeks depending on the type used.
